Welcome to another addition of ‘What a Wine Geek Drinks on a Budget’. For those of you who are new to this blog, this is where I, Maggie Walters, certified wine geek, drink through a variety of wines priced at $15 and under and write about the ones that are actually good. This gives you, the consumer, valuable information for your fiscally responsible wine shopping. Because being a responsible adult should be rewarded with good wine – not settling for something that’s just ‘ok’.
Get your note pads ready because here’s the first line up of the good stuff for cheap for 2019.
Las Rocas Garnacha 2016
I feel like I’m always in Spain’s corner cheering on the underdog, but with good reason – the juice is SO good for the price! If you are a lover of Pinot Noir, or red wines in general, garnacha is going to be your jam! Just slightly heavier than Pinot Noir, pair it with roasted meats and veggies and anything seasoned with Chinese Five Spice or Cumin.
Eric et Emmanuel Dampt Vignerons Saint Chinian Red Blend 2014
on sale $9.98
Uhhhhh hello, this wine is $10! TEN DOLLARS! (puts down megaphone)
This is a red wine from the south of France, a blend of Syrah and Grenache that’s fermented in 100% stainless steel. That’s right. A red wine with steely acidity that begs for a delicious cheese plate. This is also a great no fuss red wine to drink while reading your favorite book or cooking a quick meal on a Tuesday night.
Le Coeur de la Reine Touraine Gamay
As we’ve made our way down this wine list, we’ve progressively gotten lighter with our reds. This red wine, made with the Gamay grape, is a very light red – comparable to a cool climate Pinot Noir. Also, very appropriate as we move into spring. This fruity and fresh light red from the Loire Valley is worth every penny!
Le Coeur de la Reine Touraine Sauvignon Blanc
Finally, a white wine in the lineup! If you love crisp and steely white wines that make you think, “oooh this is zippy like a lemon!” here’s your wine. Fantastic paired with goat cheese and seafood dishes, this is a white wine to have in your arsenal. This Loire Valley white wine will impress your dinner table guests, and they’ll never guess how little you spent!
These are amazing wines for the money. It’s not always easy finding the good stuff for less, but that’s why you shop at a wine shop instead of a grocery store – so you can lean on the experts. If you have questions about other amazing budget friendly wines, come visit Colonial and talk to me or another educated team member. We’ll help you find the right wine for any price point.
Cheers to drinking great wine!
